You May Not Sin

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 2:1-2

In chapter two, verse one of John’s first epistle, he discloses what I believe is his primary purpose for writing the letter. John’s main priority is to see the Church free from sin. What fascinates me is John’s calling for the Church to walk in the light, free from sin, knowing the childish nature of the people he’s writing. Using the address “little children” shows John’s awareness of the level of spiritual maturity within the Bride of Christ.

How does John’s letter relate to Christians today? It doesn’t matter if you’re a new believer or have walked with the Lord for years; John calls you to live free from sin. Jesus Christ, our righteous advocate, died to set us free. May we be free indeed (John 8:36)!
