Wickedness

Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.” So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

Genesis 19:4-8, NKJV

How often do we call out someone else’s wickedness only to turn around and do the same or worse? I’m afraid it is probably way more often than we care to admit.

In this passage from Genesis, we find Lot being visited by angels of God posing as men, who are evaluating the city of Sodom searching for any righteous people in an agreement with Abraham. Lot is entertaining the men/angels when there is a commotion outside as all the men of the city have gathered demanding Lot to release the men so they can “know them carnally”. (Well that doesn’t leave much to the imagination unfortunately.)

Without batting an eye at their proposed idea, Lot begins negotiations. First he reprimands them for their wickedness and then instead OFFERS HIS OWN VIRGIN DAUGHTERS in exchange. Um… what? All I can say is YUCK!

Sin is yucky, there is no way around it. Some sin is more obvious to the vast majority and some is sneaky and almost seems right. But almost right and right are not the same at all.

Lot is FAR from being right and it is very easy to see. But what would you say if you looked at your own life? Is it easy for you to point out the wickedness in others but give excuse after excuse for your own?
