Understanding Our Light to the World

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Matthew 5:14

“We are the Bibles the world is reading; We are the creeds the world is needing; We are the sermons the world is heeding.” (Billy Graham)

“People who never read a word of either the Old or New Testament will read the lives of those who profess to draw their inspiration from it and will judge accordingly. They will form their opinions of Christ and of His kingdom by those who call themselves or are called by other Christians. “A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Expositor’s Bible)

If we are to be the light, we need to know the Word who is Jesus, the true light of the world. If that light is to shine through us, we need to understand how that “light” is expressed.

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on a rock. And the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house. And it did not fall, for it was founded on a rock. And everyone who hears these sayings of Mine and does not do them shall be compared to a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain came down, and the floods came, and the wind blew and beat on that house. And it fell, and great was its fall.”

Matt. 7:24-27

The word “sayings” in Greek is ‘Logos’ and it means more than words; it also involves the thought behind the words being spoken. It also goes to the motive behind the thought that has been expressed through words.

Proper motive, plus pure thought, expressed through words of life, equal life-changing light.
