Traveling the Narrow Road

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Matthew 7:12-14, ESV

I find it interesting that Jesus made a connection to how we treat people and a narrow gate. So, my question is, does this gate represent our entrance into heaven or something else?

He was talking about how “Christians” who have been “born again” into the “Kingdom of God” are to live that New Life everyday of the rest of our lives. He is also saying that a disciplined life is not going to be easy.

“The way to eternal life is narrow. We are not in heaven as soon as we get through the strait gate. Self must be denied, the body kept under, and corruptions mortified. Daily temptations must be resisted; duties must be done. We must watch in all things, and walk with care, and we must go through much tribulation.” (Matthew Henry Commentary)

The wide gate that leads to destruction, unfortunately, is filled by many who will not overcome the temptations, nor go through any opposition to godly living.

Luke 13:24  “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” (ESV)
