The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I am presently reading a book in which the author, CS Lewis, describes two existing natures. The idea is that there is a higher, or good nature; and the other a lower, or bad nature, but I believe there is a third nature. Let me explain.

Genesis 1:31, “And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good.”

I find it hard to believe, based on my life’s experiences, that there was a time in which everything was “very good.” But that is what the bible says at the very beginning. As we continue to read, we find that things did not stay that way. And, because Adam and Eve decided to rebel against the commands of God, they forfeited the good and began to experience the bad.

Genesis 3:16-19, “To the woman He said, I will greatly increase your sorrow and your conception. In pain, you shall bear sons, and your desire shall be toward your husband, and he shall rule over you. And to Adam He said because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, you shall not eat of it! The ground is cursed for your sake. In pain shall you eat of it all the days of your life. It shall also bring forth thorns and thistles to you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face, you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust, you shall return.”

It didn’t take long for Adam and Eve to turn good into bad. Even the earth was turned against them. But what about the “ugly?”

Genesis 6:5, “And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

First, everything was created good, then because of rebellion our living environment turned bad, and then the heart of mankind became evil (ugly). Fortunately, the Lord had a plan to change all that and sent His Son to save us. Perhaps you’ve seen or heard this verse in the bible.
