The Big Sleep

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Romans 1:18-20 ESV

When I was a toddler, my mom would annoyingly tell me it was bedtime by using a sing-song, high-pitched voice to declare, “GUESS WHAT TIME IT IS??”  I hated hearing her say that. I would run around the house, scream, plug my ears, and try to get as far away from her as possible to avoid the dreaded bedtime. It never worked; she inevitably put me to bed every night. No matter how much I tried to pretend it wasn’t so, she would find me, scoop me up, and into bed I went. I was an absolute terror, trying to keep her at a distance and not to hear those dreaded words.

The scene mentioned above is the picture I get in my mind when I think of people suppressing the truth about God in unrighteousness; no matter how much we huff and puff, God is real. God has made it plain to all humanity that He exists through the immeasurable power it would have taken to create the universe and everything in it, and it is clear that this power came through no human invention; it must have been divine. We can ignore the evidence for God, plug our ears to mask the truth, and run away all we like; The Ultimate Bedtime (AKA the “big sleep”) for humanity will come due whether we accept it or not. God will exact His wrath as He sees fit against all ungodliness and unrighteousness, and no one will have an excuse.
