The Appalling Harshness of Human Judgment

James 1:23-24, “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.”

One thing the bible portrays for us is the true heart of mankind. Man has demonstrated through the ages his ability to severely judge others while excusing our own wickedness. We preach tolerance, yet, with the belief that it is others who should be forced to tolerate us.

We compare ourselves to others and believe that we are somehow better than them. Even as Christians we tend to be short-sighted, unable to see past our own conceits. Believing that ‘according to our opinions’ we are somehow right and they are wrong.

It doesn’t matter that the bible says we are not to judge others, (Matthew 7:1). Why, because we don’t see it as judgment, just our ‘opinion’, and of course we want everyone to know our opinion, and how right it is; not based on the Word of God, but on some other person’s belief that happens to line up with ours.

We hold others to our standards even though the bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)

Matthew 7:4-5, “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

Once again, just my two cents worth.
