Submission to Authority is Not A Dead Value

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—  “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Ephesians 6:1-3

As we have been working through some of our small group material concerning household order, this topic has been near and dear to my heart.  I read this article by John Piper entitled, “Parents, Require Obedience of Your Children” and he speaks to the idea that while no child loves being made to obey in the short term, (either their parents or any authority!) the consequences of failing to train them up could be extremely costly—some to the point of death in the current state of the world in which we live.  If you have children, please read and consider this, as I am doing as well.  I may even print this out and discuss it with my children so they are part of the conversation.  If I don’t guide my children through the necessary process of learning to submit to the authority of their own parents, how will they ever learn to respect another adult?  This may cost them dearly. Submission to authority is not a dead value.
