Sing to the Lord An Old Song

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
Praise the Lord with the harp;
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
Sing to him a new song;
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.

Psalm 33:1-3 NIV

It’s almost Christmas time!  My husband has a pretty firm line on when one should listen to Christmas music (after Thanksgiving!) and as we are squarely in that season, we have been listening to quite a bit of it.

Music has always been a huge part of my life, and I love when my passion for music intersects with my passion for God.  In fact, there are several hymns and carols that are both beautiful, fun to sing, and draw our attention to our Lord and Savior.  I thought I would share my top ten Christmas Carols, and invite you to worship the Lord in song as you contemplate the Savior’s birth. I know the Psalm above tells us to sing to Him a new song, but sometimes the classics just hit the spot. (I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve not heard a few of these, they are oldies but goodies!)

10. Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella
9.   Go Tell It on The Mountain—(my earliest musical memory is of this song!)
8.   The First Noel
7.   What Child Is This?
6.   O Come All Ye Faithful
5.   Holly and the Ivy
4.   Coventry Carol
3.   O Come O Come Emmanuel
2.   O Holy Night
1.   Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming

What are your favorite Christmas Carols, and how do they help you worship Jesus Christ the King?

Merry Christmas to you, and may your heart draw near to the Lord this season as we consider who He is and all He has done.
