Heart and Soul

Within the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistine garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side. The name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. The one crag rose on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba. Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” And his armor-bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish. Behold, I am with you heart and soul.”

1 Samuel 14:4-7 ESV

This text has stuck with me for several years. As I first started to grow in the calling of full-time ministry God placed on my life, I began to have some revelation on this scripture and others like it. Not everyone is a Johnathan. Not everyone is the courageous leader. Every team needs a leader, but for a team to function… you have to have armor bearers. If all you have is a bunch of people wanting to give commands and share their courageous, crazy ideas… what will your team accomplish. It was in that early season of ministry that the Holy Spirit showed me who I was to be. While I lead amazing teams, my primary function is to follow my leader!

Notice that Johnathan didn’t have a perfectly formatted plan. There’s risk in everything in life. If there’s no risk, there’s no reward. My question today is this, who are you called to follow? How submitted are you to their leadership? Are you regularly ready to go or regularly asking questions? This scripture took me several years to digest. I’m not still perfect at it. I like answers. I like to know the plan. That’s seldom how it works.
Are you committed heart and soul?
