Eagerness vs. Envy

Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

Proverbs 13:12

The Bible calls out envy, or a heart of jealousy or covetousness, as sin. It’s listed in the ten “Do Nots”. We’re called to have content, grateful hearts, but we’re still called to be eager. Eager for more from God. More wisdom (James 1:5), more love (1 John 4:16), etc. We are given eager spirits.

Essentially, it’s unnatural for a believer to remain stagnant and not be regularly growing just as Jesus did (Luke 2:52). The scripture above says deferring what Christ has for  you literally makes your heart sick. When you received the spirit of Christ, you were designed to grow. You were designed for maturity.

A good pairing verse is Proverbs 13:18:
“Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction,
But he who regards a rebuke will be honored.”

Again we see fulfillment found in growth. If you’re looking at other’s around you and desiring their character, gifting, or maturity. You’ve got to stop sitting around stewing in envy and allow eagerness to push you into growth!
