Children, Part 1

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

Ephesians 6:1-4, NKJV

Over the next four weeks, I want to really dig-in to this verse. Let’s break it up into four parts/weeks.

  1. Children
  2. Obey your parents
  3. In the Lord
  4. For this is right

CHILDREN

Bible experts say that the original word used here for children clearly includes older children and not just younger children. Paul was addressing young adults. They’re not quite old enough to leave the house and live on their own but they’re old enough to comprehend this passage.

Children aren’t a sub-category in God’s design for families. They aren’t drones meant to mindlessly obey those in authority over them. Children are worth addressing directly as God does in the 10 Commandments and later Paul does here in Ephesians. I think that’s pretty cool!

No matter what your age or station today, we are to value children as God demonstrates. Don’t make them a sub-member of your family, they are full blown members! Their opinions may be smaller, but they matter, and are worthy of listening to.
