Alive in History

44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are my witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.

Luke 24:44-49

“He opened their minds to understand the scriptures.” When He opened their minds everything in the old testament got revealed to be a foreshadowing of Jesus. When we go to the beginning of our bibles it is easy to look at the old testament as irrelevant and as a book of history, and quite honestly, I used to be bored out of my mind reading it. When we open our minds and interpret it with the idea that it was a foreshadowing of Christ the scriptures almost leap off the page! The old testament comes alive!

We as Christians need to do our due diligence and not forget that the old testament and the new testament go hand-in-hand. As more and more churches fall into grace-only preaching we must not forget that our God is as much a two sided coin as we are. With the law comes grace, with the judgment comes mercy, with the old comes the new. It all goes together with the idea that it all points to Jesus in the end. He is the way the truth and the life.
