Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Genesis 32:24-28 NKJV
My daughter is exceptionally preoccupied with losing all her teeth. This is mostly because the orthodontist told her that once she lost all of her baby teeth then she could consider getting braces. She is so excited to reach that milestone that she is relentlessly tugging, pushing and wiggling that last tooth with all her might. That last tooth is the one obstacle to her goal, and she will be focused on it until it comes out. She knows it won’t give until it’s time, but she is determined to do her part to see it happen.
I admire her tenacity; this kid knows how to get what she wants! As I was watching her work on this tooth I couldn’t help but realize that if I were to get really focused and put in that kind of effort into my goals I would surely see more productivity and success. The way this kid attacks this tooth as if it were the only thing keeping her back from her hopes and dreams is how I should be pursuing the Lord.
It reminds me of the story of Jacob wrestling with God and saying, “I won’t let go until you bless me!” We all want the blessings of the Lord, but are we willing to go to Him, to seek Him, and cling to Him? Are we willing to wrestle with Him until we see breakthrough? If you’ve got one proverbial tooth left keeping you from reaching your breakthrough, seek the Lord relentlessly and see what happens after it shakes loose!
