And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. Genesis 2:2-3 NKJV
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. Hebrews 4:9 NKJV
I was still lying in bed at nearly 11 a.m. this last Monday praying and praising God for rest and for giving us His example of the Sabbath as a best practice for life. It was glorious and refreshing!
Taking intentional rest from the many works of the world and connecting with the One Who Made Me has become increasingly appealing and necessary to recharge. As someone who is constantly on the move from activity to activity it is a real struggle sometimes to slow down and remember the world will not shut down if I decide to be still. It really won’t.
As someone who also sees every minute of the day as usable time for work and things, taking one morning on my day off to sleep in to a time that seems ridiculously late to the rest of the world can feel downright lazy! But God is teaching me that rest, especially when combined with prayer and communion with the Holy Spirit is one of the most powerful forms of protection against overactivity and self-importance.
This rest and time of peace we take can give us the edge we need to fight longer, stronger and harder against the enemy and the encroaching darkness. I was reminded of the scripture in Isaiah 57:21 that states, “There is no peace (rest) for the wicked,” and I was imagining the forces of evil constantly working, moving, and attempting to penetrate the defenses of the light. The enemy never rests, never sleeps, and is never at peace. That can seem unsettling, knowing our adversary doesn’t cease to come against us.
But this is good news because Satan has not been afforded what our great God has given to us as a gift, and that is a deep and abiding rest in Christ. Someone who never takes a rest is bound to crash and burn at some time, and I am confident in the knowledge that Almighty God and His faithful people who know how to rest will outlast the enemy this day, and for all of time.
Do not hold back from taking a rest today, and connect with God who is a constant source of rejuvenation for us.
