Good intentions can be a stumbling block in our spiritual growth just as easily as bad choices. When we feel we need to increase our understanding of the Lord, we can set super high standards to how much time we will spend reading the Bible or spend in prayer. (By the way, I’m always an advocate for drawing closer and closer to the Lord through these avenues.) But sometimes our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, as my Papa said often at the dinner table. And then when we “don’t have time” to accomplish our goals, we simply do nothing.
Don’t let high goals and standards stand in the way of your relationship with God. Start small. Some days you may accomplish those goals but other days, you may feel more like a chicken with your head cut off. But there is hope even on the days you are running in circles!
My friend recently shared with our church to start every day with two children’s church songs. It’s simple! These are the only reminders you need to get focused on who you are to God and what you are to do with your day. Here they are:
1. Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
2. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
Easy enough? Yes! But those two songs are packed to the brim with truth for your day. So on those days when you don’t know where you’re going to find the time to dedicate to study His Word, just sing these two little tunes. Maybe, begin every day that way.
You are loved! What the Bible says is true and God loves you! He loves you immensely. But we are not to hoard His love just for us. We are to be a lamp on a hill, shedding His light to the world around us. Nothing will stop us from shining His Light!
ASK—Have I given up on seeking the Lord daily? If so, stop and ask God to help you start small with these two songs.
