Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
It’s important to realize that the Apostle Paul wasn’t speaking to non-believers about salvation in Jesus Christ in this passage. He’s talking to Christians about their sin… the sin they continue to commit… as Christians.
As believers in Jesus Christ, we can live WITH freedom from our sin, yet continue to live IN bondage to our sin… For Christians, sin is no longer separating us from God. Christ’s death on the cross paid the death penalty. We have been forgiven and our transgressions have been wiped clean. However, sin becomes like a ball and chain that holds us down and keeps us from living in the fullness of God’s Kingdom here on earth. It’s a crippling agent that WE ALLOW in our lives to hold us back from reaching God’s best for us!
The Holy Spirit is the key. Jesus promised his disciples that after he returned to Heaven, God would send the Holy Spirit, the helper, to empower His sons and daughters. The Holy Spirit, through pursuing the Lord, is the key to remove the ball and chain.
What sin are you still tied to? What’s holding you back from reading the next step in your walk with God? Seek ye first HIS Kingdom. Stop trying to fight off the sin and just pursue God. Through your pursuit, you’ll ditch the ball and chain!
