Have you ever imagined yourself in the place and time of when Jesus walked on the earth, and WISHED you could have been there to see him in real time? I definitely do! I think it would have been absolutely amazing to meet Jesus the man, to watch him heal, teach and perform miracles. Because we are so steeped in the temporal, and rely so heavily on our five senses to process life as it happens around us there is something quite appealing about the possibility of meeting Him in the flesh.
However, I’m so grateful that He ISN’T here today in flesh, but that He sent us the Holy Spirit to commune with us on a much deeper level than we could ever experience with Him in real time. Now that I think about it, if I had been around in Jesus’ time, chances are I would likely have been one of the thousands of people clamoring from afar, just trying to get near him or to get a short glimpse of Him. Competing with those around me, I probably wouldn’t stand a chance to get to speak to Him face to face.
But now, I have the opportunity to come before Him and still at His feet every.single.day! I have access and authority to boldly come before Him in the throne room as He is seated at the right hand of the Father and talk, ask, and just be in His presence. How much better is that?
Guess what, though? I found out last night that Jesus prayed specifically for me while He was a man! (He also prayed for you too…I just like to feel extra special!) In John 17 he takes time to pray for himself, for his twelve, and then for me, you and all future believers! I just love that He already knew us, knew we would be His and the Father’s, and would pray for our purpose; to be witnesses to the good news of Jesus to the world.
Here is His prayer for us:
I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began! O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them. John 17:20-25 NLT
