But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
Jesus called Simon (Peter) to follow Him. He called Simon to take up HIS calling and HIS purpose. Peter dropped everything he was doing. He quit his job, left his home, and made following Jesus his life’s mission.
There’s something important we often miss in this scripture. Jesus went fishing with Peter. Jesus entered into his world as He called Peter to follow Him. Often, we want people to completely drop what they’re doing and come join us in our mission. We expect people who do life with us to become part of OUR life. News flash! You have to become part of theirs as well.
I have a neighbor who loves fishing. He’s invited me several times over the four years we’ve been neighbors. I’ve only gone once. I desperately want this guy to surrender his life to Jesus… I want him to see how the church is different than the impression he got as a child. What better way do I have to influence HIS life than to become part of HIS life? Gotta go fishing…
