Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” —Luke 11:1 NKJV
What practical steps can someone take to develop a prayer life?
I was asked this recently, so here’s my best practical advice…
Find something you do daily and make that your prayer time. Think showers, that early cup of coffee, your daily run. Use these as reminders to pause and pray.
I had a friend confess to me one time that the only time they prayed was before meals. Okay, so what. You’re probably not going to let yourself go hungry so let that be your prompting. Start small until you’ve developed the amazing habit of praying daily. You’ll find that it’ll become more and more natural and you’ll be doing it much more often that your once a day prompting.
And if your mind is drawing a blank on what words to pray, take the advice from Jesus in Luke 11:2-4…
2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.” —Luke 11:2-4 NKJV
